The group has participated in numerous competative field trips and has consistently recieved a gold rating, and many first place rankings. The group performs three concerts annually: The winter concert, the all district concert, and the spring concert. Jazz Combo- The Solvay High School Jazz Combo has established itself as one of the finest high school jazz ensembles in New York State. Besides performing at a high artistic level at school concerts, each year the band participates in educational competitive jazz festivals. The group has performed with legendary jazz performers and world-renowned jazz educators including: Ed Shaugnessy, Clark Terry, Chris Vadala, Bobby Watson, Byron Stripling, Houston Person, Fred Sturm, Joe Riposo and Steve Brown. The combo has also successfully performed at Syracuse Jazz fest 1999, 2000, and 2003. The prime focus of the group is instrumental jazz performance and analysis of a wide spectrum of jazz styles. These styles include: swing, rock, jazz-fusion, funk, ballads, Latin, Afro-Cuban, world music, pop, traditional and contemporary. Compositions performed have included those of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Zawinal, Oliver Nelson, and Kenny Dorham among others. John Spillett maintains artistic direction of the ensemble including decisions regarding personnel, repertoire, soloists and performances. He nurtures leadership skills by appointing a student group leader and/ or co-leader for the purpose of communicating these directions to the ensemble in performance. During rehearsals performance and arrangement options are discussed and collaborated on to encourage student input and creativity, although final decisions are subject to the director's approval. The long-range purpose of music is to provide a means of personal expression and communication. This is facilitated in Jazz Combo where students not only play music, but also learn how to make music. To truly make music means to be able to play the melodies, which roam around in persons' mind, on their chosen instrument, spontaneously through improvisation. Jazz improvisation allows students to express their inner feelings and execute the ideas of their mind by being creative with music. This creative process challenges students to use higher level thinking skills. This ensemble allows each person to be creative and contribute to music making through the development of his or her own imagination and musical experiences.
